Top 10 Movies: 2001

My top 10 movies: 2001

Honorable Mentions:

From Hell, Evolution, Shrek, Spy Game

10. Jeepers Creepers

It’s short and fast paced, has a good villain, and a bold ending. While not a great horror film, it is enjoyable & entertaining.

9. Super Troopers

As irreverent as it is funny, Super Troopers is an infinitely quotable cult-comedy classic.

8. Tie Ma Liu [Iron Monkey]

Classic martial arts story with spectacular action choreography. (previous post)

7. Chuen jik sat sau [Fulltime killer]

With plenty of visual flair and stylistic violence, Fulltime Killer is an excellent action film. (If you disregard the plot)

6. The Royal Tenenbaums

Wes Anderson’s quirky derision about an extraordinarily dysfunctional family.

5. Black Hawk Down

Gritty, uncompromising war film about US soldiers in Somalia. Excellent cinematography and acting performances, especially the supporting actors. Also noteworthy, for being the only tolerable film starring Josh Hartnett.

4. Blow

Engaging story which follows the rise and fall of George Jung’s life as he develops and dominates the US cocaine market in the 1970s.

3. The Others

Creepy and unsettling throughout, The Others is a slow-paced ghost story with plenty of effective “boo” moments.

2. Mulholland Dr.

The first 2/3 of the film are brilliant but the ending is ridiculous, preventing it from being #1. Naomi Watts gives an angelic performance.

1. Le fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain  [Amélie]

Delightful fantasy about a young woman’s quest for love and meaning in Paris. While toned down from his previous film, Jeunet uses his unique visual style creating an almost dreamlike, surreal Paris. Also features an exceptional performance by Audrey Tautou, full of innocence and naivety. (previous post)

These lists are a great idea…it’s fun to look back and see which movies stand out from each year. Super Troopers and The Royal Tenenbaums are two of the funniest movies of the decade, and Mulholland Dr is a brilliant movie that gets better with each viewing.
