Top 10 Movies: 2006

Top 10: 2006

Honorable Mentions:

Find Me Guilty, First Snow, The Illusionist, Talladega Nights, The Prestige

10. Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

Visually stunning, some of the best cinematography I’ve ever seen. However, the ending is borderline ridiculous and the casting/acting is very disappointing.

9. 300

Another film where impressive visuals rescue an otherwise mediocre movie.

8. Casino Royale

From invisible car to Jason Bourne-esque in this desperately needed Bond franchise reboot.

7. Babel

Very engaging, well-executed about four tragic interlocking stories that span the globe.

6. Little Miss Sunshine

Original, charming, and very funny; hilarious standout performance by Alan Arkin as a drug/porn addicted grandfather.

5. Borat

I was skeptical at first since Ali G didn’t translate well to the big screen. Thankfully opting to continue with the fake-documentary approach, resulting in one of the funniest films of the decade.

4. The Departed

One of the few American remakes of a foreign film that not only doesn’t suck, but almost (not quite) betters the original.

3. Children of Men

Alfonso Cuarón masterfully creates a gloomy, futuristic Britain in this adaptation of P.D. James’ novel. The cinematography is also brilliant, including an amazing long-tracking shot capturing an assault on a vehicle.

2. El Laberinto del Fauno [Pan’s Labyrinth]

Wonderful adult fairytale-like with sudden, extreme bursts of violence. Definitely not for children, or even some adults.

1. Das Leben der Anderen [The Lives of Others]

Superb German crime drama about a Stasi Captain ordered to conduct surveillance on a couple. Ulrich Mühe gives an absolutely magnificent performance as Captain Wiesler; full of compassion, intensity, and subtlety.
